Nature Write and Walk Workshop

January 8, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

£30
Join writer & creative practitioner Bernadette McBride for this nature-inspired ” write and walk” workshop in conjunction with the beautiful Eden Tearoom & Galleries in Newburgh, West Lancashire.
This nature writing workshop will start with a ramble along the canal taking in the beauty of the local landscape, and then end up back at Eden to draw on Eden’s August to October 2022 exhibition: ‘Winter’ featuring a mixture of artwork based on the season.
We will start with an overview of nature writing and read some of the popular and emerging writers in this genre. Bernadette will cover the basics from traditional nature writing to new nature writing and links to place writing.
We’ll also think about what defines “nature” writing and discuss the current lack of diversity in this publishing phenomenon.
Could you be the new voice of nature writing?
The workshop will consist of a warmup exercise plus two main (nature-inspired) creative writing exercises, which you will be fully guided through. One exercise will be directly linked to Eden’s exhibition so you will get to see the art too and have something to talk about on your tea break!
We will share all the writing produced in a small supportive group environment as we go along. Everyone will go home having produced work and with some ideas to further develop their writing.
Bernadette will also provide an extract from her book Rootswhich has a chapter set in the Fairy Glen at nearby Parbold Hill.
You will be sent optional reading materials ahead of the workshop.

Bernadette McBride is the author of Roots: The Eco-journal(pub. 2018). She was shortlisted for the Manchester Fiction Prize 2020 for the UK’s biggest unpublished writing prize and won an award for the Biggest Impact on the City of Liverpool for her creative writing workshops in 2019. She is a PhD candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Liverpool, where she teaches creative writing and has developed writing workshops on nature, climate change and place within the English department.
